Why We Choose Elvstrøm EKKO EXRP for Hunter 707 Sails

Why We Choose Elvstrøm EKKO EXRP for Hunter 707 Sails

The Hunter 707 class has always been about close, competitive racing at a price point that keeps the fleet accessible. With boats matched so evenly, the quality and consistency of your sails can make the difference between mid-fleet and a podium finish. That’s why we’re excited to offer Elvstrøm sails built in the new EKKO EXRP material — a sailcloth that blends performance with sustainability, perfectly suited for the 707.

What Is EKKO EXRP?

EKKO EXRP is Elvstrøm’s exclusive sustainable laminate cloth. It takes the proven durability and performance of their EXRP (Elvstrøm X-Ply Racing Polyester) material and adds an environmental dimension:

  • Recycled polyester (rPET): Much of the polyester content is derived from post-consumer recycled sources (such as plastic bottles).
  • Low stretch / high durability: Like standard EXRP, the cloth is engineered for shape stability under load, resisting the “bagging out” that can ruin performance after a season.
  • X-Ply reinforcement: A diagonal fibre grid locks in shape and prevents distortion when the sail is flogging or loaded hard upwind.

In short: you get the familiar longevity and responsiveness of EXRP, but with a lower environmental footprint.

Why It Works So Well on a 707

The 707 is sailed hard. Regattas often mean repeated hoists, flogging through manoeuvres, and plenty of loads transferred between the rig and sails. That puts a premium on cloths that are tough, dependable, and hold their shape.

EKKO EXRP ticks the boxes:

  1. Excellent upwind performance – The low stretch properties mean your jib and main stay flatter and more efficient, translating into better pointing and acceleration out of tacks.
  2. Value for money – Sails last longer in top condition, so you’re not replacing them as often. That’s a big plus in a one-design class where budgets matter.
  3. Environmental responsibility – Choosing recycled fibres means you’re reducing demand for virgin polyester and helping Elvstrøm push the industry toward greener production.

How It Compares to Other Materials

  • Dacron (woven polyester): Very durable and affordable, but heavier and less shape-stable. Fine for cruising, but not fast enough for top-level 707 racing.
  • Membranes (like Elvstrøm EPEX): Ultra-light and precise, but come at a higher cost and require more care. Excellent for high-level campaigns, but sometimes overkill for club racing.
  • EXRP / EKKO EXRP: A balanced middle ground — strong, race-tuned laminates that deliver reliable performance with longer life, now with the added benefit of recycled content.

Why We Like It for VMG’s 707 Customers

When we recommend EKKO EXRP to 707 owners, it’s because it strikes the right balance: fast enough to win races, tough enough to last seasons, and progressive enough to reflect where sailing is heading as a sport.

Whether you’re refreshing your sail inventory or getting a new set for the Nationals, EKKO EXRP is a smart choice that delivers both performance on the water and peace of mind onshore.
