Sail Layouts

The sail layout defines how the sailcloth is cut and assembled. This construction method plays a key role in performance, durability, and cost. At Elvstrøm Sails, we offer three main layout styles—from the reliable and affordable cross-cut to our high-tech EPEX membranes.

1. Crosscut (X-Cut) Layout

Best for: Cruising, durability, affordability

The cross-cut or X-cut layout is made from horizontal panels running perpendicular to the leech. It’s a cost-effective and time-tested method ideal for cruising sails.

  • Panels are made from woven polyester (Dacron), which has strong fill yarns aligned with the sail’s primary load direction.

  • Simple, strong, and reliable—perfect for sailors looking for value and longevity.

2. Radial (Trioptimal) Layout

Best for: Performance cruising and club racing

Also known as trioptimal, this layout uses panels that radiate from each sail corner, following the natural load paths. The result is a more efficient load distribution and improved sail shape retention.

  • Typically built from laminate cloths (multi-layered sandwich materials).

  • Some versions may use woven polyester for cruising sails or nylon for downwind sails.

  • Ideal for sailors who want enhanced performance without the complexity or cost of membranes.

3. EPEX Membrane Technology

Best for: High-performance racing and precision cruising

Our exclusive, patented EPEX membrane is the pinnacle of sail construction. Each sail is custom-designed with fibers laid exactly along computer-calculated load paths—tailored to your sailing style and rig setup.

  • Vacuum-bonded for unmatched shape stability and durability.

  • Available in a wide range of fibers including Technora®, Vectran®, Carbon, and Aramid.

  • Fully customizable in structure, strength, and appearance.
